2013 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic | Champions Tour Golf in Biloxi MS
Game on! The 2013 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, March 18 – 24, pits defending Champion Tour winner Fred Couples against the 2011 winner, Tom Lehman, along with a field of well-seasoned contenders including Mark Calcavecchia, Nick Price and Bernard Langer.
Champions Tour
The Champions Tour hosts some of the most recognizable and accomplished golfers in the game who are age 50 and older. Beginning in 1980 as the Senior PGA Tour and purses totaling $475,000, the Champions Tour now generates more than $122 million for local charitable organizations. The benefiting charity of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic is Habitat for Humanity whose efforts since 2007 have focused on housing for displaced victims of Katrina.
The Defending Champ
Known as the “King of Cool”, Fred Couples is a crowd-pleasing favorite who “makes it look so easy.” His laid back manner, however, does not mask his intensely competitively drive. He refers to the times in which he has played as “a great era of playing along with both the young Phil Mickelsons and the older Greg Normans and Nick Prices” (GolfChannel.com). Couples, who is 52, will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in May of this year, having played in his first Ryder Cup in 1989 and going on to win 15 PGA tour victories and the Masters in 1992.
Tournament Schedule
The Tournament kicks off on Monday, March 18 with practice rounds for Champion Tour players. March 19 – 21, Pro-Am play begins at Grand Bear, with the first round of tournament play on Friday, March 22, at Fallen Oak. The Tournament continues through the final round on Sunday, March 24.
